March for Life

July 23, 2014 By Scott Zipperle

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the March for Life?

The March for Life began in Washington, D.C., as a small demonstration and rapidly grew to be the largest pro-life event in the world.  The peaceful demonstration that has followed on the somber anniversary of Roe V. Wade every year since 1973 is a witness to the truth concerning the greatest human rights violation of our time, legalized abortion on demand.

Where and when is the March for Life?

The March for Life official program will be held on Wednesday, January 22, 2015 on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. beginning at 14th St.  The program begins with a rally at 12 noon, and a time of musical reflection at 11:30.  There will be jumbo-trons for easier viewing.

The march begins immediately following the rally at approximately 1 pm and  proceeds from the National Mall, makes a right on Constitution Avenue, makes a right on 1st St. NE, and ends in front of the U.S. Supreme Court.  We then encourage you to visit your congressmen in the House and Senate office buildings.

How do I begin to plan a March for Life trip?

It is never too early to start planning!  The earlier you begin planning, the better rates you can get on buses and hotel rooms, and the more time you have to fundraise for your trip.  The earlier you plan, the more time you have to get the word out about your March for Life trip to family, friends and members of your local pro-life group or church.

Before you can begin planning any other aspect of the March for Life, it is important to set your schedule.  Some groups come to Washington, D.C. for a day.  They arrive the day of the March for Life, participate in the March, meet with their elected representatives and drive home that same evening.  This keeps costs low, as you would not need to pay for hotel rooms and other added expenses.

Other groups make their trip to Washington, D.C. last several days.  The March for Life Convention is the day before the March for Life and features, the Youth Rally, the Exhibition Hall, the Law of Life Conference, Capitol Hill 101, and the Culture of Life panels.  Once you finalize your schedule, you can begin making hotel reservations and other travel arrangements.

When should I book a bus?

Book a bus as early as possible, many bus companies fill up months before the March for Life.  If you are worried about not being able to fill a bus, consider partnering with other groups in your area, such as neighboring schools, churches or local Right to Life groups.  Your bus company should take care of obtaining a bus permit, but you may want to confirm with them.  More information on bus permits can be found HERE.

Where can I find reasonably priced hotels for my group?

The March for Life has reserved a limited number of rooms at the Downtown DC Renaissance. The rate for groups is $184.00/room plus tax.  You can find information about the DC Renaissance and additional hotels HERE.

Where should the buses drop us off?

Buses should park at RFK Stadium.  Marchers can then ride the Metro from the Stadium-Armoy Metro stop to the National Mall.  Additional information on riding the metro and purchasing fare cards can be found HERE.

The March is over, now what?

Before you leave Washington, we strongly encourage you to visit your elected officials and advocate for Life!  When you go home, get involved! Don’t make the March for Life a once a year event, but work every day to protect the unborn.

Additional Helpful Information:

·         Portable restroom facilities are available on the Mall, and public restroom facilities are available in the Smithsonian museums.

·         First Aid stations will be located at various points on the Mall surrounding the rally.

·         To enter the House and Senate buildings, visitors must go through security. For a list of prohibited items in the Capitol Visitor Center click HERE.

Marching On: Rachel del Guidice

It’s hard to believe it’s been six months since the March for Life! Which means it’s also six months until January 22, 2015 and we’re certainly busy with plans for the 42nd March for Life. At this mid-point in the year, we want to highlight a few stories of young people and how they have “marched on” for life after January, and how the March for Life has impacted their lives and those around them.

Our first interview is with Rachel del Guidice. She’s from Ashland, Ohio, and is currently a junior at Franciscan University majoring in Communications and minoring in Journalism.

Rachel, in middle, with friends at 2014 March for Life

(Rachel, in middle, with friends at the 2014 March for Life)

When did you first come to the March for Life?

My first year at the March for Life was 2006, I believe, and I was 12 years old! I’ve been every year since with either my church or my school.

What was your biggest take-away from this past March for Life?

Molly Anne Dutton’s story really impacted me. Stories like hers are what will change people’s hearts and minds because they touch the heart. Molly Anne’s story shows how the culture of death can be rejected. And of course, just being part of the event. It’s inspiring and the pictures don’t do it justice.

How have you been marching on for life since January?

I’ve been involved with my college’s abortion clinic outreach – we pray outside the clinic every Saturday.  It’s hard, but it’s so important to pray – not only for the people going into the clinic, but for everyone in our group. I was also inspired to intern for a pro-life organization. I was blessed with the opportunity to intern for the Family Research Council, a pro-life and pro-family policy and grassroots organization.

It’s definitely different for every person though – how they “march on” and impact their community. We are each called to witness to the cause of life, even if it is “just” praying.

How do you see yourself being involved in the pro-life movement in the future?

I’m not sure specifically, but I definitely want to be in a position with purpose, so that I can do something every day to impact our culture.

What’s your advice for fellow young people?

Don’t get deceived by the culture. Know where you came from, who you are and the reason why you do what you do. You have to search your heart every day and think about how you can make a difference.

Did you attend the 2014 March for Life? Were you inspired to “march on” for life back at your school or community? We would LOVE to hear your story too! You can submit a brief description of how you have “marched on” for life HERE. If your story is chosen, we will contact you to learn more about what you have been doing for the cause of life since January 22, 2014. We’ll feature you in a blog and on our social media, as a way of inspiring every Marcher. We look forward to hearing from you!

6 Tips (from a local) for Riding Metro

As many March for Life participants come from out of town, riding the Metro can be a new and confusing experience. We, at the March for Life, want your transportation to and from the March to be safe, comfortable, and commotion free.

Before leaving your bus, hotel room, or gym floor, make a plan, and communicate it to your team members. Make sure everyone in your group understands the fundamentals of riding the D.C. metro system. Plan your trip using the Metro Trip Planner, know what color line you are getting on, know your departure station, and arrival station. Download and distribute to your group the Metro Pocket Guide. Have a plan in case someone in your group gets separated in the crowd, or accidentally misses your train. Provide chaperone and group leader cell phone numbers to every participant of your group. Purchase fare cards ahead of time, and ensure you have enough money on the card to cover travel.

Here are six “local tips” which will help make your metro ride as smooth and as easy as possible. Follow these tips, and you’ll be riding the metro like a D.C. local!

1. Have your metro card easily accessible, before you enter the station. Metro Stations are crowded during rush hour, and even more crowded on the March for Life, during rush hour. One way to alleviate long lines, and avoid the frustration of fellow metro riders is to have your metro card ready, in your hand, before you enter the line for the faregate.

2. Don’t Run. I understand your scenario, and see it every day: you are walking down the escalator, and you see your train on the platform. You think “I better run so that I don’t miss that train!” You end up pushing and shoving, and someone gets hurt. I promise, another train will come, and most likely in no more than five minutes, and very often in less than 1 minute. Metro officials are expecting a high volume of riders this January 22, and are well accommodated for your arrival. The last thing that we want to happen is for pro-lifers to have a bad name among D.C. residents!

3. When riding the escalators, stand to the right, walk to the left.  This is an easy way to avoid the annoyance of local metro riders. If you are going to stand, stand on the right hand side escalator and walk on the left, unless of course, everyone is walking, then walk.

4. DO NOT try to hold the metro doors open. Metro doors are not like elevator doors, and will close on your hand, arm, leg, backpack etc, and believe me, it hurts. Attempting to hold open doors will only delay train departure, frustrate your fellow riders, and possibly injure you. If you are afraid that some of your group members will be separated, make a plan ahead of time, in the event that this happens.

5.Keep your valuables in a safe place. Electronic thefts in metro stations have been on the rise in recent years. Metro advises that you put electronics away while riding metro, but if you must have them out, be aware of your surroundings. Most cell phone thefts happen near the door, so do not use your cell phone near the door of a metro. You don’t want to end up like this guy:

6. Don’t eat or drink on Metro. It is illegal to eat in the DC metro facilities; this includes escalators, platforms, trains and buses. There are large fines for eating, drinking and littering on metro. I think it’s safe to assume this is the last thing you want to spend your money on at the March for Life.

In short, be aware of your surroundings, and keep a close hold on your valuables, be courteous, don’t push, shove, or run. Treat Washington D.C. as you would treat your own home, and treat other riders, as you would treat your friends. Let’s blow away local riders by how courteous and polite pro-lifers are!

#WhyWeMarch Social Media Campaign

The March for Life is just around the corner, and hundreds of thousands of Americans will flock to Washington, D.C. to advocate for life.  While we’re thankful for pro-life victories in recent years, the reasons we march are as pressing as ever.

However, the pro-life generation is taking hold; we need to continue to share the truth about abortion and the humanity of the unborn child.  One way we can do this is through social media.

Throughout this Sanctity of Life Month and leading up to the March for Life on the 22nd, we encourage pro-lifers to upload a photo to Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter with the hashtag #WhyWeMarch and the reason you’d like to share “why we march” for life on January 22nd.  We’ll select 20 of our favorite photos to be a featured in March for Life video!

The 2015 March for Life Theme is “Every Life is a Gift.” We’d love to see your pictures that incorporate our theme!  You can read more about the theme HERE.
