As supreme knight of the Knights of Columbus, Carl A. Anderson is the chief executive officer and chairman of the board of the world’s largest Catholic family fraternal service organization, which has nearly 2 million members.

Mr. Anderson has had a distinguished career as a public servant and educator. From 1983 to 1987, he served in various positions of the Executive Office of the President of the United States, including special assistant to the President and acting director of the White House Office of Public Liaison. Following his service at the White House, Mr. Anderson served for nearly a decade as a member of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights.

From 1983 to 1998, Mr. Anderson taught as a visiting professor of family law at the Pontifical John Paul II Institute for Studies on Marriage and Family at the Pontifical Lateran University in Rome. In 1988, he became the founding vice president and first dean of the Washington, D.C., session of this graduate school of theology now located at The Catholic University of America.

He is the author of the New York Times bestseller, A Civilization of Love: What Every Catholic Can Do To Transform The World; co-author (with Msgr. Eduardo Chávez) of Our Lady of Guadalupe: Mother of the Civilization of Love, also a New York Times bestseller; co-editor (with Livio Melina) of The Way of Love: Reflections on Pope Benedict XVI’s Encyclical Deus Caritas Est; co-author (with José Granados) of Called to Love: Approaching John Paul II’s Theology of the Body; and author of Beyond a House Divided: The Moral Consensus Ignored by Washington, Wall Street and the Media.

Mr. Anderson was the only Catholic layman from North America to serve as an auditor at the World Synod of Bishops in 2001, 2005 and 2008. In addition, Mr. Anderson participated as an auditor in the 2012 Synod of Bishops.

Pope John Paul II appointed Mr. Anderson as a member of the Pontifical Academy for Life (1998) and the Pontifical Council for the Laity (2002), and as a consultor to the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace (2003). Pope Benedict XVI appointed him as a consultor to the Pontifical Council for Social Communications (2007) and as a member of the Pontifical Council for the Family (2008). In addition, he has served as a consultant to the Pro-Life Committee of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) since 2002.

Mr. Anderson is a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of St. Sylvester, a Knight of the Order of St. Gregory the Great and a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.

He serves as a member of the International Scientific Council of the Studium Generale Marcianum of Venice. In 1994, he was a member of the Vatican delegation for the Fifteenth Meeting of the International Jewish Liaison Committee held in Jerusalem.

Mr. Anderson currently serves on the Board of Trustees of The Catholic University of America and the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception. He has received honorary doctorates from The Catholic University of America, The Pontifical Theology Academy of Krakow and St. Vincent’s Seminary, Latrobe, Pa. Mr. Anderson is the recipient of many honors including the Imago Dei Award, Archdiocese of Denver (2005); the Canterbury Medal, Becket Fund for Religious Liberty (2007); Servant of Peace Award, Path to Peace Foundation (2007); Rector’s Award, Pontifical North American College, Rome (2008); The John Carroll Society Award (2009); the Lupa Capitolina Award, City of Rome (2009); the John Cardinal O’Connor Award (2009); and the Evangelium Vitae Medal (2015).

Mr. Anderson served as assistant supreme secretary and supreme secretary of the Knights of Columbus until he became supreme knight in October 2000. Prior to that, he served as the Order’s vice president for public policy from 1987 to 1997. He has been grand knight, district deputy, state advocate, state secretary and state deputy for the District of Columbia.

Since Mr. Anderson assumed the responsibilities of supreme knight in 2000, the Knights of Columbus has achieved new heights in charitable giving, providing in 2018 alone over $185.6 million directly to charity and more than 76 million hours in volunteer service.

In addition, Supreme Knight Anderson has overseen consistently strong growth in the Knights’ financial resources. In 2018, the Order’s insurance in force surpassed $109 billion.

Despite two serious market corrections during his tenure, the Knights has remained financially strong. Today, the Knights of Columbus is one of the largest and most respected insurance companies in North America.

Supreme Knight Anderson has also led the Knights in a variety of charitable endeavors including:

  • Establishing the Heroes Fund to provide immediate assistance to the families of first responders who lost their lives in the terrorist attack on Sept. 11, 2001;
  • Establishing the $2 million Pacem in Terris Fund, the earnings of which are used to promote peace initiatives in the Holy Land and to assist the Latin Patriarchate in supporting the Christian community there;
  • Financially sponsoring the 2004 Papal Concert of Reconciliation;
  • In partnership with Project Medishare, establishing the Healing Haiti’s Children program, which has provided approximately 1,000 victims in Haiti with prosthetic limbs in the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake that devastated that country; and
  • Launching the Christian Refugee Relief Fund, a charitable fund that has raised more than $25 million to benefit persecuted Christians in the Middle East. These funds are used for food, housing and other basic necessities for those in the region who have fled their homes.

Mr. Anderson holds degrees in philosophy from Seattle University and in law from the University of Denver. He is a member of the bar of the District of Columbia and is admitted to practice law before the U.S. Supreme Court.

He and his wife, Dorian, are the parents of five children.

March for Life Announces Congressional Speakers for the 48th Annual March for Life

“Life unites and calls people of goodwill to a common mission: respect for the inherent dignity of the human person, born and unborn, should unite all persons, regardless of political party.”

~ Jeanne Mancini, President of the March for Life ~

Washington, D. C. – Today, the March for Life Education and Defense Fund announced the congressional speakers for the 48th annual March for Life’s virtual rally on January 29, 2021. Those speaking at the virtual rally include Representative Chris Smith (R-NJ), a long-time pro-life champion in the U.S. House of Representatives; Representative Kat Cammack (R-FL), whose life was nearly lost to abortion and ran for public office in large part because of the life issue; Kentucky House of Representatives Minority Whip Angie Hatton, a Democrat who is currently serving her third term in the Kentucky House of Representatives, where she supported numerous bills to protect women and the unborn, as well as babies that survive an abortion; and Hawaii State Senator Mike Gabbard, a Democrat representing Hawaii’s 20th Senatorial District who has a long history of defending life, including signing a letter asking the Democratic Party to reject abortion extremism. He is also the father of former U.S. Representative Tulsi Gabbard.

Each of these congressional and state leaders fill critical roles in the public square because of their efforts to protect every human life. The theme for this year’s March for Life is Together Strong: Life Unites and it highlights the importance of each person in building a culture of life.

Statement on 2021 March for Life

The protection of all of those who participate in the annual March, as well as the many law enforcement personnel and others who work tirelessly each year to ensure a safe and peaceful event, is a top priority of the March for Life. In light of the fact that we are in the midst of a pandemic which may be peaking, and in view of the heightened pressures that law enforcement officers and others are currently facing in and around the Capitol, this year’s March for Life will look different.

The annual rally will take place virtually and we are asking all participants to stay home and to join the March virtually. We will invite a small group of pro-life leaders from across the country to march in Washington, DC this year. These leaders will represent pro-life Americans everywhere who, each in their own unique ways, work to make abortion unthinkable and build a culture where every human life is valued and protected.

We are profoundly grateful for the countless women, men, and families who sacrifice to come out in such great numbers each year as a witness for life – and we look forward to being together in person next year.  As for this year’s march, we look forward to being with you virtually.

Looking Back on 2020 at the March for Life

2020 was a year that impacted all of us; we have learned and grown during these hard times. But even as we welcome in the new year with hope and look towards the 2021 March for Life on January 29th, we also cherish the positives and “silver linings” from this past year.

Join us below as we reflect upon our favorite moments and pro-life accomplishments in 2020.

THE 2020 MARCH FOR LIFE

On January 24, President Donald Trump made history by being the first-ever sitting President to make an in-person appearance at the March for Life! Vice President Mike Pence also made a virtual appearance from the Vatican.

In his remarks to marchers, President Trump declared, “Together, we will defend this truth all across our magnificent land. We will set free the dreams of our people. And with determined hope, we look forward to all of the blessings that will come from the beauty, talent, purpose, nobility, and grace of every American child.”

STATE MARCHES

We co-hosted the 2nd Virginia March for Life on February 13th, which drew pro-lifers from across Virginia to the state capital in Richmond, despite a rainy day.

Over the next couple of months, as we began the Covid shutdowns, March for Life and March for Life state partners unanimously agreed to postpone the remaining 2020 State Marches in light of the pandemic.

Since we could not march together in person, we shifted to virtual events with our state partners, hosting pro-life advocacy training webinars in Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and California.

QUARANTINE CREATIVITY

In late Spring and early Summer, while students were learning in their virtual classrooms, and many workplaces shifted to an online environment due to COVID-19, we saw an opportunity to offer no-cost, pro-life educational content for families.

We partnered with pro-life activists, like Abby Johnson, and medical professionals, like Dr. Christina Francis M.D., to bring first-rate pro-life educational content online through Facebook Live and YouTube.

March for Life also partnered with pro-life movie producers to host “Pro-Life Movie Nights” on our Facebook platform, combining the powerful messaging of the entertainment industry with the truth about life. The March for Life live stream lecture series received a total of over 145,000 views, and the March for Life movie series received over 152,000 views.

TOGETHER STRONG: LIFE UNITES

In the early Fall, on September 10th, we announced the theme of the 2021 March for Life, “Together Strong: Life Unites,” by bringing together 30 of the most prominent pro-life voices for a virtual theme debut webinar.

While abortion divides in so many ways, LIFE is the ultimate unifier. The pro-life movement is a diverse, dedicated, and multi-talented community. When we all work together in defense of the unborn, we will see a culture of life and love welcomed in our nation and world.

If you were not able to join us, you can still watch the event here!

MAKING HEADLINES

Throughout the year, the March for Life represents your pro-life voice in the media, be it through publishing pro-life opinion editorials, being interviewed by print, radio, or television media outlets, or with our vast social media presence.

This year, the March for Life achieved 348 major media hits in 2020:

  • quoted in 300+ print stories
  • published 24+ opinion pieces
  • appeared in 15+ television interviews
  • participated in 30+ radio interviews

We are honored to represent the collective voice of hundreds of thousands of pro-life marchers, like you, in the media year-round.

BRINGING YOUR VOICE TO CAPITOL HILL

In December, we learned that for the second year in a row, The Hill Top Lobbyist 2020 named Vice President of Government Affairs of March for Life, Tom McClusky, as one of the top Grassroots Lobbyists on Capitol Hill.

Since joining the March for Life team in 2013, Tom McClusky has dedicated his efforts to bringing the collective, massive voice of the marchers to the Hill throughout the entire year. We are proud of Tom and so grateful to have him working for you!

HELPING SHAPE HISTORY

Throughout the year, March for Life Action, sister organization to March for Life, mobilized thousands of citizens to be powerful voices for life, particularly in the confirmation hearings of now Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett.

With an advocate audience of over 215,000 pro-life Americans who have contacted their lawmakers nearly as many times this year, March for Life activists created a lasting impact.

Every message sent represents a pro-life American exercising his or her civic responsibility and affecting real change on a local, state, and federal level. Through the March for Life Action network, pro-life citizens are provided an avenue to march for life year-round.

These are just the highlights!

To read more about the March for Life in 2020, check out our Annual Report!

We are so proud of the pro-life advances made this year, which could only happen with your support. Thank you! We look forward to continuing to build a culture of life together in 2021!
