No media coverage at the March for Life?

It seems that every year, comments from pro-lifers on the March for Life include: the massive crowd, the large numbers of young people, the frigid weather, and … the lack of media coverage.

This year, as a staff member at the March for Life Education and Defense Fund, I have been able to experience firsthand, the media coverage that the March for Life DOES get.  We are lucky to work with Shirley and Banister Public Affairs, a leading conservative Public Relations firms in the Washington DC area.  The volume of calls and emails coming in, requesting interviews, press releases, information, etc. is overwhelming at times.

There are many reasons that the March for Life has not been covered by media outlets in the past, but staff at the March for Life, in the last year or so, have made a conscious effort to make sure that the media is welcome at the event. We have worked to provide the media with the tools, and information that they need to accurately report on the March.

Over the past 40 years, pro-lifers have become so used to complaining about the lack of coverage at the March that we have forgotten to recognize, and be grateful when media coverage does happen.  Here is a link to over forty media hits, some friendly, some neutral, and some negative, (note: this is NOT a comprehensive list).

Please take a minute to read and watch some of these media hits about the March for Life. Then take a moment to share them and thank the networks and news outlets for their coverage.

Of course the coverage of the March wasn’t perfect, but it seems that we are moving in the right direction. If we thank the networks for their coverage this year, open our arms to the media and appreciate what they have done, maybe they will come back in full force next year, and report on this important annual human rights event!

Remember, we want the media to cover the March, not because we went to an awesome, energizing event with a lot of people, rather we want the media to cover the event so that we can tell the world “Why We March”. We March to bring attention to the tragedy of abortion, that the millions of lives lost have been lost and, and millions of mothers and fathers have been hurt by abortion in America. We march to build a culture of life.  Let’s not forget that.

“I know that the Life issue is not and cannot be just a partisan issue”

Those of us braving the cold yesterday were grateful for the many motivating speakers the March for Life rally had.  One disappointment was that one of the speakers, Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-Ill.) was stuck on a tarmac back home in Illinois and couldn’t make it in time due to the weather.  He did make it in time to host a screening of the new pro-life movie “40” and join us at last night’s Rose Dinner.

His office was kind enough to share the remarks he would have given, weather permitting.  I have posted them below:

March for Life

Remarks of Congressman Daniel Lipinski

January 22, 2014

Good afternoon!  Thank you for braving the snow and the cold and joining together for Life!

Yes, I am a Democrat.  I know that the Life issue is not and cannot be just a partisan issue.  I see a lot of Catholics out there – and I especially want to welcome all those from the Chicago and Joliet Dioceses – but this is not just a Catholic issue, or even just a religious issue.  It’s an issue that should motivate everyone who believes in science, human rights, and truth – the protection of our most basic right, the right to life.

Many said that after Roe v. Wade in 1973, the issue of abortion had been settled in America, but look around you.  How many of you were not even born 40 years ago?  As you can see, the pro-life movement continues to build, continues to grow,  and we will not rest until all life is protected and respected.

I want to thank you for coming to Washington to help in the work I am doing with my colleagues up here to change the laws of our land.  But don’t just go home and leave it up to Washington.  We can’t lose focus on the need for every single one of us to work to change the hearts and minds of our neighbors.

Being pro-life is not just being anti-abortion, it is about embracing life. It is about supporting pregnant mothers in need, which we see every day in our pregnancy support centers across the country.  It is about promoting adoption and encouraging mothers in difficult situation to make this heroic decision.  It is about Project Rachel and other post-abortion healing ministries. It is about loving and giving dignity to all.

Every year, I am uplifted by your participation in the March for Life.  And with hard work and God’s grace, we will move our nation to the culture of life.  God bless you, and God bless America.

No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act to be voted on next week

If you missed the March for Life yesterday (to which I say “How could you!”) you missed Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va) telling the hundreds of thousands gathered that next week the House of Representatives will be voting on H.R. 7, legislation to take taxpayers out of the abortion industry.

“I am also proud to announce that next week, the House will vote once and for all to end taxpayer funding for abortions.

“The No Taxpayer Funds for Abortion Act, written by our good friend and colleague Chris Smith, will respect the morals and consciences of millions of Americans – and ultimately will save lives.

“Getting this bill through the Senate, however, and signed by the President will be a much tougher task. But I can make you this promise: the people’s House will stand for life. We will do everything in our power to make sure that our values and the sanctity of life are reflected in the law of the land.”

After the announcement pro-life staff shared the following on the legislation:

Pro-life Groups:

At the March for Life today, Rep. Eric Cantor announced that the House of Representatives will consider H.R. 7, the “No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act” next week.  This legislation will make the Hyde amendment permanent and government-wide and will remove funding for insurance plans that include abortion from the Affordable Care Act (ACA).

Since the exchanges created by the ACA have gone into effect, the bill required several updates. The text of H.R. 7 as it will be considered on the floor is available here. The notable changes to the bill are:

1.      The provisions preventing taxpayer funding for abortion under the ACA go into effect for plan years beginning January 1, 2015.

2.      Between enactment and January 1, 2015, the transparency requirements included in H.R. 3279, the Abortion Insurance Full Disclosure Act will ensure that consumers are fully informed about abortion coverage and surcharges in plans sold on the exchanges.

3.      Technical corrections are made to eliminate the accounting gimmicks and secrecy clauses in the ACA. In addition conforming language is included to ensure that no multi-state plan includes elective abortion (instead of the current language only requiring that one plan has to exclude abortion language).

 4.      Tax provisions not relevant to the ACA have been removed.
