President Obama and the State of the Union: What He Should Have Said

WASHINGTON, D.C. Tonight President Barack Obama gave his State of the Union address.  March for Life President Jeanne Monahan reacts to his speech:
“President Obama’s State of the Union address tonight was a disappointment to any American who believes in the dignity of the human person Instead of embracing a pro-life message that empowers women and is reflective of the majority of Americans –as was evident in the hundreds of thousands of dedicated pro-life participants in the March for life in Washington just last week– this President still opposes the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act. The act, which the House of Representative passed earlier today in a bipartisan vote, prevents taxpayers’ dollars from supporting the abortion business. A January 2010 Quinnipiac University Poll showed that 67% of respondents opposed federal funding of abortion.
“As for the pressing issue of conscience rights, the President was silent. His own mandate which forces groups like the Little Sisters of the Poor and the March for Life Education and Defense Fund to cover abortion inducing drugs and devices is currently in front of various courts across the nation, including the United States Supreme Court.
“Forcing a group of Catholic nuns to be complicit in the purchase of abortifacients, contraceptives and sterilizations is the antithesis of ‘empowering women.’ No American should be forced into that situation. Recent polling shows a large majority of Americans do not agree with the President; at least 59 percent oppose this anti-conscience mandate.

World Renowned Christian Artist Matt Maher Leads Outstanding Group Participating in March for Life

Young People, Women’s Health Organizations, and Latino Groups Join Wednesday, January 22 Event in Washington

Washington, DC – Christian singer and songwriter Matt Maher will share his talents with the hundreds of thousands of expected participants at the 41st annual March for Life on Wednesday, January 22nd. Maher will provide music before the Rally on the Mall and the finale as the March begins.

“Matt is undoubtedly a world class performer, and we are pleased he can join us this year at the March,” said Jeanne Monahan, President of March for Life. “Matt has such a beautiful way of sharing the pro-life message, and has done so at the Youth Mass and other March activities in years past.” Maher says he is grateful for the opportunity to write songs that somehow help people along the way.

The issue of life is one that affects every demographic of American society. The speakers at the March come from various backgrounds, and represent many different organizations. Giovanna Romero of Latinas por la Vida, Nicole Peck of Silent No More, and Youth Speaker Molly Anne Dutton will all be featured speakers at the event that marks the legalization of abortion in 1973.

“The March for Life is blessed to have such a powerful group of speakers at the rally this year, with compelling stories of support for the dignity of all human beings from birth until natural death” says Monahan.

The theme of this year’s event is adoption. “Adoption is a heroic decision for pregnant mothers who find themselves in a difficult situation,” says Monahan. “We want to eliminate the stigma of adoption and encourage women to pursue this noble option.”

This year will mark the 41st March for Life in Washington, D.C. Hundreds of thousands of people participated in the March in 2013, and crowds are expected to keep growing as young people from around the country participate. The annual event begins with the rally on the National Mall at noon, followed by the March to the Supreme Court.

The March for Life in Washington, D.C., began as a small demonstration and rapidly grew to be the largest pro-life event in the world.  The peaceful demonstration that has followed on this somber anniversary every year since 1973 is a witness to the truth concerning the greatest human rights violation of our time, legalized abortion on demand.
