From Fargo to DC: Destination, March for Life!

From Fargo to DC: Destination, March for Life!

Guest Blog post by Julia Johnson
Senior, Shanley High School, Fargo, North Dakota

march for life 2013AEach year that I go on the March for Life, a hunger for righteousness grows stronger in my heart.  I have never been part of a more noble cause than the fight for life.  I have been privileged to go on the March for Life with my fellow students three years in a row, this year being my fourth, and I can barely contain my excitement!  My very own high school, Shanley High, was chosen to carry the lead banner.  When our chaplain told us the news I was in shock, what an incredible HONOR!  To lead the charge in the fight for life is almost unthinkable; with humble hearts I can only say that we all feel truly blessed to have this opportunity.

Sophomore year waiting on the Mall for the March to begin.
Sophomore year waiting on the Mall for the March to begin.

In past years, the most students that I have made the pilgrimage with has never exceeded 140 students.  But this year, it is our goal to become the first high school in March for Life history to bring our entire student body!  We have over 300 students!  I’m ecstatic to see the enthusiasm and excitement grow in anticipation of the March.  The March for Life has been one of the biggest impacts on my life, and I want as many people as possible to have the same opportunity to see what I see every January.

When walking down Constitution Avenue there is the biggest form of camaraderie between you and every single person in the March.  You’re a team, one large family, and all are present for the same purpose.  It doesn’t matter what religion, race, or age you are, you’re all there to reach a common goal.  I have never experienced this feeling on such a massive scale before, and reminiscing on my very first March, it was the most overwhelmingly and joyous feeling I’ve ever experienced.  But it instilled a drive in me to return every year since.

Some of my most favorite memories have been made on the March, you never fully know what you are going to experience.  Every year is unique.  But certain things never get old, such as the thrill of running up the steps to the Lincoln Memorial, going to the Smithsonian museums, and of course singing and praying your hearts out to protect the lives of the unborn.  No matter how many times you go, the March for Life pilgrimage is worth it. My fellow students and I are able to be a part of something bigger than ourselves.  We are able to be a voice for the voiceless.

March for Life 2015: Why We March

Hundreds of thousands of Americans will soon flock to Washington, D.C. to advocate for life at the 2015 March for Life.  While we truly believe that the tide is turning in the direction of the pro-life cause, the reasons we march are as pressing as ever.

Social media is a powerful medium to reveal the truth about abortion. Social media not only unifies countless and various pro-life voices who wouldn’t otherwise be able to come together, but it also allows for extraordinary images and facts to be shared with large numbers of pro-life advocates in a very short time-span.

Throughout this Sanctity of Life Month and leading up to the March for Life on the 22nd, we encourage pro-lifers to upload a photo to Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter with the hashtag #WhyWeMarch and the reason you’d like to share why we march for life on January 22nd. We’ll select 20 of our favorite photos to be a featured in March for Life video!  You can participate even if you’re not attending the march in Washington, D.C. because building a culture of life is a unified effort that we are all in together!

March for Life Announces Details for Rally & March on January 22, 2015

Washington, D.C.—The March for Life Education and Defense Fund has announced the details for the 2015 March for Life.  “Every Life is a Gift” will be the theme of the 2015 March for Life, and seeks to draw attention to the pre-born populations that are at the greatest risk for abortion: those who receive a prenatal disability diagnosis. The march will take place on January 22, 2015.  The day’s events will begin with a rally on the National Mall, which will be followed by a march to the U.S. Supreme Court to hear testimony from women who regret their abortion.  Radio and television outlets are welcome to broadcast live from the rally event.  A media tent will be provided for on-site broadcasts.

The March for Life Education and Defense Fund has launched several new digital tools for the 2015 March for Life – the March for Life Movement Map, a Trip Finder, and the March for Life mobile app. The Map, debuted on December 4th, seven weeks prior to the 2015 event, shows the nationwide support for the March for Life, and allows marchers to share their participation on social media networks.  The Trip Finder allows interested marchers to connect with trips from their local area, and the updated March for Life app, available on iTunes and Google Play, is an all-inclusive tool for March for Life planning, participation, as well as pro-life resources.

The March for Life in Washington, D.C., began as a small demonstration on January 22, 1974, the first anniversary of the now-infamous Supreme Court decisions in Roe v Wade and Doe v Bolton and rapidly grew to be the largest pro-life event in the world.  The peaceful demonstration that has followed on this somber anniversary every year since is a witness to the truth concerning the greatest human rights violation of our time, legalized abortion on demand.

Jeanne Monahan-Mancini, President of March for Life Education and Defense Fund, is available for interviews. For more information or to schedule an interview, please contact Ryan Hughes at RHughes@SBPublicAffairs.com or (703) 739-5920.
